At the end of 2015, the extension of the A4 between Delft and Schiedam ( the Netherlands ) was opened by the transport minister, Melanie Schultz. A large part of this new motorway passes through a new land tunnel, the Ketheltunnel. In the past years, a large team of engineers has worked on the automation of this tunnel. Also engineers of Batenburg IAS were involved in this project.

For many years, people have been complaining of the traffic problems between Rotterdam and The Hague. That is why in 2009, it was decided to expand the motorway between Delft and Schiedam. A part of this new motorway passes through a sunken land tunnel. In 2012, the construction of the new motorway and tunnel began.
Simultaneously, a control system for this new tunnel was designed. This control system is actually the heart of the tunnel, because it connects all the separate systems, such as ventilation, lighting, camera systems, communication systems and fire extinguishing systems. The integration of these installations ensures an adequate response in case of an incident in the tunnel.
Batenburg IAS also contributed to the realisation of this control system. Various engineers of Batenburg IAS were involved in the realisation of the control software, such as creating the GUI (control screens), development of the critical and sub-critical tunnel functions as well as testing the various software modules. The project was carried out according to the SCRUM method in which several teams of engineers from various companies worked together in a multi-disciplinary project.
